Milan still outplayed after a late fall
Davide Ballerini wins the sixth stage of the Giro d'Italia, from Paestum to Naples, 141 km.
The Italian rider managed to take advantage of a fall in the final and surprise everyone.
The stage featured a breakaway by two Alpecin riders, Planckaert and Vergallito, who were then caught by three other men, the two Bardiani riders Tarozzi and Marcellusi and Bais, from Polti. Planckaert broke away, and the peloton caught the other four escapees with 35 km to go.
The sprint was finally reached, but on the final bend, aided by the rain, the riders slipped on the cobblestones of Naples: Milan, Groenewegen, and Magnier went down , while Davide Ballerini managed to avoid the crash and sprinted ahead, winning the stage. Behind the Astana rider was Stuyven , who was working to launch a sprint for Magnier, who nevertheless managed to get up and finish in third place.
Nothing changes in the general classification with Eulalio remaining in the pink jersey.
