A crazy stage, Johannessen 2nd, Scaroni 3rd. Ayuso retires.

Alex Aranburu (Cofidis) wins the fourth stage of the Itzulia Basque Country, starting and finishing in Galdakao (167.2 km).

The first news of the day was Ayuso's retirement due to stomach problems, after just a few kilometers.

The stage was very lively from the start, with McNulty attempting a solo breakaway. Behind him, a group of over 30 riders broke away and caught up with him at 36 km to go.

On the Elorritxueta the breakaway is very selective, while from behind, at 1'30", the men in the general classification also begin to move.

Aranburu and Johannessen took the lead on the final climb up Legina , but were caught in the final climb. The top-ranked riders also arrived from behind, with Izagirre, Bilbao, and Seixas having gained an advantage on the descent.

In the final sprint, however, Aranburu had the winning lead and beat Johannessen and Scaroni .
