Alpecin double with Philipsen second
Mathieu Van der Poel won the 121st edition of the Paris-Roubaix race today, April 7, over the distance of 259 km. After a fall at the start of the race which forced Jonathan Milan to retire, and the disqualification of Joshua Tarling who remained attached to the flagship for too long, the selection took place very far from the finish line thanks to the push of the Alpecins.
Thirty remain in front, with a further selection in the Arenberg forest 90 km from the finish. Between attacks and punctures, Politt, Kung and Gianni Veermersch leave but the protagonist is still him, Van der Poel, who starts -60 km from the finish, catches up with the fugitives, and leads a triumphant ride with over 2' of advantage on his opponents, all the way to the velodrome.
For Vdp it is the second consecutive Roubaix, the sixth Monument of an incredible career. Behind him , Jasper Philipsen, Mads Pedersen and Nils Politt are fighting for the podium with Stefan Kung unable to keep up with the pace of the three. The Belgian comes second, 3' behind, for an Alpecin double which is already history (the second in a row at Roubaix) ahead of Pedersen.
