The announcement on his 33rd birthday

Peter Sagan has announced that he will retire from road cycling at the end of 2023. The decision was communicated by the Total Energies rider on his 33rd birthday and on the rest day of the Vuelta San Juan he is racing in Argentina.

“The time has come – he explained during a press conference – it's not a matter of performance, even if I won everything during the year, I wouldn't change my mind. Cycling just isn't everything and I always thought I would retire in my 30s."

The Slovak is aiming to race the Olympic mountain bike race in Paris 2024.

His palmares includes three consecutive world championships , one Paris-Roubaix, one Flanders, three Ghent, 12 stages at the Tour de France (where he wore the green jersey seven times), four stages at the Vuelta and two at the Giro d'Italia .
