Father Patrick reveals: 'This could be a new peak for Remco to conquer.'
After yet another display of strength in the time trials at the 2025 World Championships in Rwanda, the Hour Record seems to be the next logical goal for Remco Evenepoel. The Belgian champion absolutely dominated the World Championships, beating Australian Jay Vine by 1:14 and Tadej Pogačar by a whopping 2:37, even catching him despite starting 2:30 earlier.
Patrick Evenepoel, the champion's father, told Sudinfo newspaper that, although they haven't spoken directly about it yet, this type of challenge could be very interesting for his son: "It's typically the kind of challenge he needs to enjoy. He knows it requires specific preparation; it's not something you can improvise. He has the specific qualities to succeed."
Remco himself has already expressed his interest in this historic challenge, responding positively to Eddy Merckx's appeal, which had invited both him and Pogačar to attempt the record before retiring: "Yes, I will, but it will take a few more years. I think there's a way to beat it," the Belgian told L'Equipe.
The current record is held by Italian Filippo Ganna at 56.792 km, set in October 2022 at the Velodrome Suisse in Grenchen. If Evenepoel were to achieve this feat, he would join an exclusive club that includes legends such as Merckx, Indurain, Wiggins, and Boardman.
