No challenge with Pogacar: the Slovenian falls and retires

Remco Evenepoel (Soudal Quick Step) won today the 109th edition of Liège-Bastogne-Liège.

In addition to the second consecutive success of the world champion in the Belgian classic, the news of the day is the withdrawal of Tadej Pogacar , who crashed after 90km. The Slovenian suffered a fracture of the scaphoid and lunate bone of his left hand. He will be operated on in the Genk hospital, his participation in the Tour de France at great risk.

Race enlivened at the beginning by a breakaway with several riders including Simone Velasco, caught up on the Redoute together with Ian Tratnik. A little more than 30km from the finish line, Evenepoel's show kicked off, taking everyone away (the last to give up was Thomas Pidcock) and flying towards victory after 258km of racing.

In Liège he precedes Pidcock by more than a minute, a surprising Santiago Buitrago (Bahrain Victorious) and Ben Healy (Ef Education EasyPost).

Many disappointments among the big names: Mikel Landa, Enric Mas, Alexey Lutsenko, David Gaudu and Benoit Cosnefroy, among others, are far from the finish line.
