A breakaway of eleven athletes animates the race from the early stages. Among the favourites, Lotte Kopecky is the first to move with a short acceleration on the Tolfe.

The attackers are reabsorbed 20 km from the finish line by the group made up of around twenty units, which includes all the best. The second pass on the Tolfe is decisive : Niewiadoma attacks together with Vollering , Kopecky and Longo Borghini , with the latter two also leaving in the following downhill stretch.

The two arrive at the foot of Via Santa Caterina with a good margin over their pursuers, Kopecky takes off decisively and manages to get away from Longo Borghini . This is the second victory at the Strade Bianche for the world champion. Second is Longo Borghini, while Vollering beats Niewiadoma in the sprint for third place.
