The favorites control themselves too much and lose the race
Magdeleine Vallieres (Canada) wins the world road championship in the 164.9 km race in Kigali.
With 58 km to go, the first interesting attacks occurred, with Ruegg and Benito gaining an advantage of about a minute over the leading group, which had been reduced to around thirty riders.
With three laps to go, a small group of nine riders broke away and caught up with the two leaders, and Longo Borghini attempted a first attack near the finish line. After his attempt, however, the favorites stopped and lost almost two minutes to the leading group.
On the penultimate pass on the Cote di Kigali Golf , Fisher-Black , Vallieres and Garcia took the lead, while the main group struggled to recover and for this reason Reusser and Le Court-Pienaar set off.
Longo Borghini, Ferrand-Prevot and the other big names moved too late and the race was decided by Kimihurura among the three leading riders: Vallieres was the first to attack immediately as soon as the cobblestones began and created a gap.
The Canadian flies towards an incredible world title, second place for Fisher-Black (New Zealand), third Mavi Garcia (Spain).
