Tour de France, Stage 18: Carapaz takes a commanding victory

Richard Carapaz (Ef Education) wins the 18th stage of the Tour de France, from Voiron to Orcières-Merlette (185.2 km).

Today's victory will be decided by a breakaway , a fact the riders are well aware of and battle for many kilometers to find the right attack. There are about forty men attempting it, divided into several small groups.

Pedersen managed to lead an interesting group, with the Dane winning the intermediate sprint and moving to +32 over Philipsen in the green jersey standings.
The right breakaway was made by six men who managed to gain an advantage with 45 km to go: Jorgenson, Carapaz, Johannessen, Paret-Peintre, Garcia Pierna and Schmid.

The six managed to create an unbridgeable gap over the other escapees and thus went on to play for victory in the uphill finale.
Carapaz broke the deadlock 4 km from the summit, with Paret-Peintre managing to react, as did Schmid and Jorgenson . The EF rider pulled away again and went solo.

Carapaz increased his lead in the final kilometers and triumphed; behind him were Schmid and Jorgenson .

The top-ranked men all arrive together at 4'40".
Tomorrow the decisive and highly anticipated Alpe d'Huez .
