Adam Yates won the first stage of the 2023 Tour de France, with start and finish in Bilbao of 182km. The British rider is the first yellow jersey of the race.

Stage enlivened in the first part by a breakaway of five men but the group does not leave too much space.

In the Cote de Vivero descent, Enric Mas crashed, forced to retire, and Richard Carapaz (suffering and 15 minutes off) then the battle broke out on the Cote de Pike: Pogacar, Vingegaard and the surprised Lafay remained ahead. In the downhill they are taken up by Adam and Simon Yates who gain twenty seconds and go to fight for the success of the stage.

In the end it is the UAE Emirates rider who prevails over his brother, Pogacar finishes third in the group which also includes Vingegaard. Only eleventh Wout Van Aert.
