Tour de France: Carapaz wins stage 20

Richard Carapaz won the 20th stage of the Tour de France, from Bourg d'Oisans to Alpe d'Huez, 170 km.

On the first climb of the day, the Croix de Fer, the breakaway breaks away and, as the kilometers pass, gains an ever-widening advantage. Carapaz (who takes the polka-dot jersey), Kuss, Hindley, and Ayuso remain ahead on the next Col du Galibier, while Riccitello loses ground on the descent. Meanwhile, Mads Pedersen takes the green jersey, and Pogacar becomes Del Toro's domestique.

On the final climb to the Col de Sarenne, Kuss remained alone, followed by Carapaz. Ayuso was caught by the yellow jersey group, which now consisted of only Pogacar, Del Toro, Evenepoel, and Martinez, with Seixas dropping away. In the winding finale after the categorized climb, Kuss nearly crashed and was overtaken by Carapaz, who reached the finish line alone, winning his second stage in a week. Evenepoel followed him about thirty seconds behind, followed by Kuss. Pogacar and Del Toro finished together, about a minute apart. Seixas lost two minutes but salvaged fourth place. Del Toro, meanwhile, finished third and took the white young riders' jersey.

Tomorrow is the final stage, modified, in Paris: only 89 km will be covered for organizational reasons (the Gendarmerie is short of personnel deployed in fire zones), but the Montmartre climb is safe. It will be climbed three times before the final finish.
