The route and the favorites of the fifth stage
The thrilling success of Wout Van Aert was the starter of one of the most anticipated stages of this Tour de France , the fifth, from Lille to Wallers-Arenberg.
The riders will pedal on the legendary stones of the Paris-Roubaix and in the 157 km of today's test , they will face 11 sections of cobblestones , for a total of 19.4 km.
There will be many unforeseen events, even if the good weather should save the group an even more hellish day.
The wait is all for the duel between the yellow jersey Van Aert and rival Van der Poel, two of the strongest men on the cobblestones, but there is a group of specialists able to ignite the race suddenly: the Quick Step Lampaert and Sénéchal, Van Baarle, Ganna and Pidcock for Team Ineos, Pedersen and Stuyven for Trek-Segafredo, Sagan and Turgis for Total, Kung for Groupama and Kristoff for Intermarché.
For this reason, the stage will be even more insidious for the men in the standings, called to defend themselves on a terrain that is definitely not suitable for them. The only one who could play a leading role could be Tadej Pogacar , who put himself to the test last spring and was the protagonist on the pavé of the Tour of Flanders , but today the terrain could present different unexpected events. The others, from Roglic , to Vingegaard , up to Thomas , Yates , Vlasov , and Mas , will have to play in defense. The two captains of Jumbo Visma (as well as Thomas of Team Ineos) will be able to count on the help of a very strong team on the cobble with Van Hooydonck, Benoot and Laporte, as well as Van Aert. But what will the yellow jersey do? Will he leave aside his personal ambitions to help the team in case of difficulty? All that remains is to wait and enjoy the show.
