Tour de France Women: Vollering wins and returns to the yellow jersey

Demi Vollering (FDJ United-Suez) won stage eight of the Tour de France Femmes with a deadly attack on the short but extremely tough Chemin de l'Arieta, 6 km from the finish. This victory also earned her the yellow jersey with one stage to go.

Also on the podium with her were Italian champion Elisa Longo Borghini (UAE Team L'IMAD), who finished second, and Kasia Niewiadoma-Phinney (Canyon-SRAM), the overall leader going into the race and winner of the seventh stage, who finished in third place.

The decisive move came right near the top of the climb: Vollering made the perfect attack at the right time, outpacing both Niewiadoma-Phinney and Longo Borghini. On the descent, the Dutchman's advantage was just three seconds, but as the kilometers passed, the gap gradually widened until he crossed the finish line with a lead of 17 seconds.

Thanks also to the time bonus he earned at the finish line, Vollering will arrive at the final stage, which will end in Nice, with the yellow jersey on his shoulders and an 8-second lead over Niewiadoma-Phinney.

Longo Borghini, however, had to make up 1'53" on Reusser, now third and still on the podium.
