Van Aert completes the podium; S.Yates loses 47" for a fall
Stage eight of the 200.7km Tour de France from Libourne to Limoges.
The three-man breakaway, formed by Turgis, Delaplace and Declerq, starts in the first kilometers of the race. In the choppy finale, Jumbo-Visma sets a frantic pace in favor of Van Aert and catches up with Turgis, the last fugitive to give up, with 8 kilometers to go.
The group is compact in the last kilometer which tends to climb slightly; the sprint was spectacular: Jumbo's men tried to take the lead for Van Aert , then it was the usual Van der Poel's turn who worked for his teammate Philipsen who put in a splendid head-to-head with Pedersen . The Danish former world champion wins the day who manages to precede the Dutchman from Alpecin who until now seemed unbeatable. Van Aert closes in third place.
Simon Yates loses ground in the general classification who falls together with Landa outside the 3 km of neutralization and pays 47" from the other men in the classification and loses two positions.
Cavendish is the unfortunate protagonist of another fall: the Briton is forced to retire and has to say goodbye to the record of victories in the Tour.
