2nd an extraordinary Ganna, 3rd Pogacar

Mathieu Van der Poel wins the Milan-Sanremo, the first classic monument of the season, 289 km long.

8 men on the attack from the start of the race: Le Berre, Sbaragli, Verre, Veistroffer, Nencini, Turconi, Stewart and Marcellusi. The leaders acquire a maximum advantage of almost 6' on the main group.

UAE Team Emirates hides until the start of the 'Capes', that is to say about 55 km from the finish and leaves control of the race in the hands of Alpecin and Ineos.

On the Cipressa the group crumbles on Wellens' attack, Pogacar attacks and only Van der Poel and Ganna resist him; the 3 reach the top with 30" on a small group of 20 riders.

Pogacar attacks as soon as the Poggio begins , but Van der Poel resists every attempt and even tries an attack at the top. Ganna loses something and reaches the summit with a 10" delay.

Ganna returns to via Roma and the three of them play out the Sanremo in a sprint: with 500 meters to go they are almost stopped, Van der Poel breaks the ice , Ganna tries to take his wheel, but the Dutchman resists and triumphs. 3rd place for Tadej Pogacar.
