Vuelta: Brenner king of the Pandera

Marco Brenner won the 14th stage of the Vuelta, from Jaén to Sierra de la Pandera, 154.5 km.

It was a scorching day on the Spanish roads. Today, another massive breakaway of about forty riders, with Berthet and Cristian Rodriguez poised to gain positions in the overall standings. Other contenders for the stage win included Paret Peintre, Nordhagen, Buitrago, Fortunato, Zana, Steinhauser, and Martin. After a push by Vermaerke, Steinhauser and Martin attacked at the foot of the final climb. They were joined by other breakaway companions, including Zana, Brenner, and Aparicio, a Spaniard from Burgos. But it wasn't over: on the toughest section, Buitrago made the difference, followed by Brenner, Rodriguez, and Ivan Ramiro Sosa. At the final kilometer, Brenner and Buitrago remained, with the Tudor rider taking the stage win.

Carapaz and Gall were making their way behind them, but in the end, Enric Mas was once again gaining ground on his closest rivals in the overall standings: Roglic, Carapaz, and Onley. The only one still holding onto the race leader's wheel was Gall, now in second.
