Vuelta: winning escape by Van Aert

Wout Van Aert won the 13th stage of the Vuelta a España, from Almunecar to Loja, 192.8 km.

Another crazy stage, with a massive breakaway of 40 riders taking off: among the attackers were Skjelmose, Bisiaux, Fisher Black, Buitrago, Kron, Widar, Vermaerke, Van Aert, and Brennan. Along the route, the breakaway exceeded a five-minute lead, while Gall lost his domestique Muhlberger, who crashed and retired. Everyone was racing against the two Visma riders, the big favorites of the day: with 15 minutes to go, nine remained in front, while with 3.8 minutes to go, Van Aert rejoined, followed by Paret Peintre. The Belgian, increasingly in control of the green jersey, was the strongest today, outsprinting the Frenchman and taking the win. Brennan finished third overall, ahead of Widar, with the group of red jersey rider Enric Mas three minutes behind.
