Vuelta: Omrzel wins in Calar Alto

Jakob Omrzel wins the twelfth stage from Vera to Calar Alto.

In the early stages of the race, a massive breakaway of 30 riders broke away, including Omrzel, who was only 8 minutes behind Mas in the general classification.

The stage exploded on the penultimate GPM, with numerous attacks among the escapees and Carapaz's attempt in the leading group, which was however stopped almost immediately.

On the final climb, Omrzel remains alone in front, while Mas once again leaves all his rivals in the standings behind.

The young Slovenian from Bahrain takes a solo victory and takes a truly prestigious victory.

Among the big names, Mas took another 27" on the trio formed by Gall, Roglic and Carapaz and over 2' on Onley, the big loser of the day.

Roglič remains second, now 1:45 behind Mas, while Gall remains third at 2:06.

This slip allowed Richard Carapaz (EF Education-EasyPost) to overtake Onley and move up to fourth place, while the Briton dropped to fifth place, still managing to narrowly retain the white jersey for best young rider.

The real star of the day in terms of the general classification was undoubtedly the stage winner, who is now in sixth place overall at 4:59.

Omrzel's comeback saw both Mattias Skjelmose (Lidl-Trek) and Sepp Kuss (Visma-Lease a Bike) slip one place, now seventh and eighth respectively, both far from a podium pace today.

Gall's teammate Gregor Mühlberger retains ninth place after another strong performance serving his captain, while Harold Tejada (XDS Astana) slips to tenth, 8:33 behind Mas.
