The organizers of the Tour of Portugal have confirmed the death, during the eighth stage of the race, of Finlay Tarling, 19-year-old rider of the NSN Development team.

"In this moment of deep distress, the Tour of Portugal organisation and the Portuguese Cycling Federation express their sincere condolences to Finlay Tarling's family, his teammates, the NSN Development Team and all his friends and loved ones."

In light of this tragic event, the race to the finish line in Fafe will be cancelled, and out of respect and mourning, the podium ceremony scheduled for today will not take place. The organization will provide further information as soon as circumstances allow.

Initial reports suggest the young athlete collided with a car that was not part of the race organization.

Tarling was the younger brother of professional cyclist Joshua Tarling of Netcompany INEOS.
