Route and favorites of the Tour of Flanders
Here we are. The Tour of Flanders means an appointment with the history of cycling. But before analyzing the route and favorites, we remind you to line up your lineup for the Lega Ronde Van Vlaanderen available on our app.
Up for grabs are prizes worth a total of 500 euros made available by Fantacycling. Read here how to participate: Play the Ronde Van Vlaanderen League | Fantacycling (fanta-cycling.com)
The race, now in its 108th edition, measures 270 km starting from Antwerp and finishing in Oudenaarde.
After the first 100 kilometers of running without particular difficulties, but in which the day's escape will almost certainly start, the runners will begin to tackle cobblestone sectors and walls such as the Old Kwaremont, with its 2200 meters at 4%, and a maximum gradient by 11%. Then the Kapellberg, followed by the Molenberg series, Marlboroughstraat, Berendries and Valkenberg.
After the walls of Berg Ten Houte and Nieuwe Kruisberg/Hotond, here is the second passage on the Old Kwaremont, followed by the Paterberg. Then Koppenberg, the cobbled sector of Mariaborrestraat and the Taaienberg, from where there will be 36 kilometers to the finish.
Brief respite and here we are again on Kruisberg/Hotond , then the last passage on the Old Kwaremont and Paterberg . From here there will be 13 km, flat, to the finish line.
Logically we start from the number one favourite, Mathieu Van der Poel , winner of two editions, twice second and once fourth in previous participations. Given the absence of Van Aert, Visma will have Matteo Jorgenson as captain, the revelation of this start of the season. But not only that: Tiesj Benoot, who appeared in good form at the recent Dwars door Vlaanderen, and Dylan Van Baarle will also be there. We wondered a lot about his form after last Wednesday's fall, but Mads Pedersen will be at the start (even if not 100%). Is it possible to see him ahead to compete for the final victory?
Stefan Kung and Matej Mohoric are two more cards to play with such a demanding race. The former comes from a sixth and fifth place in the last two years at the Ronde, the latter hasn't gained much from this race in the past but with his class he could give the big favourites a run for their money. If he doesn't have physical problems, Alberto Bettiol is a name to consider given that in his palmares there is a Flanders victory in 2019. And then two names not to be underestimated: Ben Turner of Ineos and Toms Skuijns of Lidl Trek, captain in the Pedersen case suffers from the blow he took at Dwars.
Finally, pay attention to surprises.
