Evenepoel falls twice, Roglic and Leknessund lose ground

Kaden Groves wins the 171km fifth stage of the Giro d'Italia from Atripalda to Salerno . The Alpecin rider Deceuninck precedes Jonathan Milan and Mads Pedersen in a sprint lead from start to finish.

A busy stage characterized by bad weather that opens with three retreats, Ramon Sinkeldam (Alpecin Deceuninck), Rémy Rochas (Cofidis) and Valerio Conti (Team Corratec).   Fright for world champion Remco Evenepoel who crashes after 20 km due to a dog on the side of the road, too close to the runners. The Belgian remains on the ground for a few seconds , but then restarts without worrying consequences (at least in appearance); Soudal Quick Step 's teammate, Davide Ballerini, also crashed with him.

Instead, three riders try to attack: Thomas Champion (Cofidis), Stefano Zoccarato (Green Project-Bardiani CSF Faizanè) and Stefano Gandin (Team Corratec) , with the group that however seems to control without particular worries.

Among the fugitives, the last to give up is Samuele Zoccarato, who with great generosity manages to stay in command up to 6 km from the conclusion.

Just then there is a crash in the main group, Evenepoel stays in front, while Maglia Rosa Leknessund and Primoz Roglic stay in the second group, but then manage to recover.

Then Evenepoel falls again 2.2 km from the finish and remains on the ground very angry, but once again it doesn't seem to have suffered any consequences. The world champion falls, however within 3 km of the finish and the time neutralization will start for him. Then the final sprint in which Groves precedes Milan and Pedersen, while on the finish line there is another crash involving Mark Cavendish and Andrea Vendrame who is carried away on a stretcher.

The Norwegian Leknessund remains in the pink jersey.
