Gall second, Pellizzari loses a minute and a half
Jonas Vingegaard won the ninth stage of the Giro d'Italia, from Cervia to Corno alle Scale, 184 km.
Eight riders broke away: Ballerini, Marcellusi, Milesi, Rubio, Loland, Geens, Naberman, and Bais. They were joined, about 60 km from the finish, by Ulissi, Aerts, and Ciccone.
After gaining a two-minute lead over the pink jersey group, the gap narrows as Rubio and Ciccone remain alone at the front.
On the final climb, Ciccone also dropped Rubio, while Pellizzari lost contact behind him, while Gall and Vingegaard continued to make a difference, catching the Lidl Trek rider less than 2 km from the finish. Shortly after the final kilometer, Vingegaard launched a decisive attack, taking the stage win over Gall, who was second, and ahead of an exceptional Piganzoli.
Pellizzari lost nearly a minute and a half. Eulalio, fifth on the stage, retained the pink jersey.
