-4 in the Tour: only 7 Azzurri at the starting line, never so bad since 1983
Four days before the start of Bilbao, all the formations that will take part in the 2023 Tour de France have been made official . There will be only seven Italian riders , never so bad since 1983, when six started and Riccardo Magrini managed to conquer the eighth stage at Ile de Oleron. Slightly better in the previous two editions with fourteen last year and nine in 2021.
The stage victory has been missing for three years (64 consecutive stages), when Vincenzo Nibali triumphed at the finish line in Val Thorens.
Our hopes this year fall on Giulio Ciccone (Trek Segafredo), who could also aspire to the polka dot jersey of best climber, on Bettiol (Ef Education-EasyPost), Moscon (Astana Qazaqstan Team) and Trentin (UAE Team Emirates) , who could have freedom of escape in the moving stages.
Another runner with a good starting point is Luca Mozzato (Team Arkea Samsic) who could try to sprint in the event of a restricted sprint. It's more complicated to imagine a success for Oss (TotalEnegeries) and Guarnieri (Lotto Dstny) expected, on paper, to follow-up tasks.
