After a 2026 season plagued by crashes and injuries, the Australian has tied his future to the Emirati team: here's what it means for fantasy cycling.

After a year marked by bad luck and physical problems, Jay Vine has put his future on paper: the Australian has extended his contract with UAE Team Emirates-XRG until the end of the 2029 season.
With this agreement, the Australian time trial champion will reach seven total seasons with the Emirati team, where he arrived in 2023. Over the years, Vine has become a top-level time trialist, a breakaway hunter, and a top domestique, capable of working for his teammates without giving up on seizing personal opportunities.
His journey in the UAE jersey started with a bang: at 30, he already boasts two overall victories in the Tour Down Under, his home race, the first of which came on his debut with the team. His palmarès also includes stages at the Vuelta a España (where he won the mountains classification twice), the Tour de Romandie , the Coppi e Bartali , and the Vuelta a Burgos .
2026 had started off on the best possible footing, with a stage win and a second overall title at the Tour Down Under. Then, however, the season turned into an ordeal. On the fifth stage of the Australian race, Vine was hit by a kangaroo in the middle of the peloton. He suffered a broken wrist, but he found the strength to reach the finish line and take home the overall title.
Bad luck continued to haunt him. At the Volta a Catalunya, he crashed on the third stage and was forced to retire. At the Giro d'Italia, he was one of two UAE riders forced to abandon the race after a massive fall on the wet asphalt of the second stage , suffering a fractured elbow and concussion. Another crash and another retirement at the Vuelta a Burgos, and then illness also sidelined him at the Vuelta a España.
The end of the season, however, showed his mettle: second place in the Chrono des Nations , beaten only by a steamroller-like Remco Evenepoel (Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe).
In the team statement, Vine said: "I'm incredibly happy to continue with the team until 2029. I couldn't imagine a better fit, and I'm incredibly grateful for the trust and support I've been shown, through the good times and the toughest. This support means a lot to me, and it's something I truly appreciate about this team."
And again: "I'm already working towards the 2027 season and can't wait to get started. There's still so much I want to achieve, and I'm excited to continue working with true friends and see what we can accomplish together in the coming years."
