Lukas Nerurkar is facing a series of serious injuries after being hit by a car in early July. The medical report released by his team, EF Education-EasyPost , is far from reassuring: a broken and dislocated collarbone, a fractured sternum, a cracked vertebra, a broken rib, and a small punctured lung. A serious medical condition for the young British runner, just 22 years old.

The accident occurred on July 2 , while Nerurkar was training on the streets of his hometown in England, where he had returned to visit his family after competing in the British National Championships. He spent two nights in hospital, undergoing surgery on his collarbone that same week.

" The first thing is that I'm happy it didn't go any worse, but it's scary that a car can do this to you so easily, " Nerurkar said in the team's official statement. " And then there's the long-term part: missing the races I was looking forward to with great excitement. Races like Austria and Poland, where I was hoping to take advantage of the good summer conditions. Now that won't be possible. "

In lieu of racing, the runner plans to take short walks with his parents and dog while he begins the long recovery process. The clavicle surgery proved more complex than expected: " Since it's the distal part of the clavicle, closest to the shoulder, with several damaged ligaments, the doctors had to work on those too. It wasn't as simple as inserting a plate. And then there's the fractured sternum and rib, which also need to heal, " Nerurkar explained. " With a normal clavicle fracture, it's a matter of weeks, but in this case I might have to wait a little longer. We hope to be back on the trainer within a couple of weeks. "

Team doctor Jon Greenwell 's initial estimate is six to eight weeks of recovery , with the punctured lung healing well on its own. This significant absence weighs even more heavily considering the youngster's current form.

This is the second consecutive year plagued by injuries for Nerurkar. In 2025, he was forced to a prolonged layoff after suffering a fractured jaw and a concussion in a crash at the Trofeo Laigueglia. A pure talent, he joined EF at 19 after winning a difficult mountain stage at the Giro Next Gen in 2023, but bad luck continues to halt him at the crucial moment. The hope is that he can return to full strength by the end of the season, but for now, his schedule remains to be determined.
