Paul Seixas, the teenager who makes the greats tremble: fifth overall at the 2026 Tour de France

The 19-year-old Frenchman also completed stage 10 to Le Lioran and climbed the overall standings, despite a hair-raising descent on Puy Mary.

Paul Seixas continues to amaze. In his first Tour de France, the young Frenchman is rising to the occasion with a maturity that belies his 19 years. Finishing third in the grueling and dangerous tenth stage in Le Lioran , Seixas has gained valuable positions in the general classification, climbing to fifth place . This is an extraordinary achievement for the youngest rider at the start of the 2026 edition, the youngest debutant at the Tour in its 89-year history.

His goal is ambitious: to fight for the podium in his first Grande Boucle. And so far, despite the enormous pressure weighing on the shoulders of such a highly anticipated talent, Seixas seems to have the situation under control. On the July 14th stage, the French National Day, through the Massif Central, he kept pace with everyone except Tadej Pogačar , who staged a winning solo breakaway with 15.5 km to go. The Frenchman bided his time, placing third in the sprint and collecting four precious bonus seconds.

"Not all third places at the Tour have the same flavor, but this one is certainly special," Seixas said at the finish, as reported by L'Équipe . "The Tourmalet stage was for pure climbers. Today was a stage for strong riders: shorter, more chaotic efforts. Being able to be present on both types of terrain is a great achievement."

The standings tell a compelling story: Seixas is just 13 seconds behind Juan Ayuso (fourth), 29 seconds behind Remco Evenepoel (third), and 59 seconds behind Jonas Vingegaard (second). The gap to Pogačar is 4 minutes and 35 seconds, but a podium finish is absolutely within reach. And that, for a 19-year-old rookie, is something extraordinary.

The stage, however, also had its share of scary moments. On the descent from Puy Mary-Pas de Peyrol , the penultimate descent before the finish line, Seixas experienced a spine-chilling moment. "The descent was extremely dangerous," the Frenchman admitted. "The asphalt, in my opinion, was literally melting. I felt my rear wheel slipping without even leaning into the curve. I completely lost my bearings. The descent felt like an ice rink. Luckily, we were in front at the time and didn't take any unnecessary risks."

Protecting their captain during the climb were teammates Nico Prodhomme, Matthew Riccitello, Tiesj Benoot, and Aurélien Paret-Peintre, who escorted him to the summit in an ideal position. A valuable team effort, one that is rarely given the due recognition in fantasy cycling.

"The Tour is still long; you have to know when to stop," Seixas added wisely. "Of course, everyone was giving it their all. I wasn't thinking about whether I should take the white jersey or not. I just wanted to get to the finish line, gain as much time as possible, and cross the line as quickly as I could."
