Decisive solo attack 42km from the finish
Tim Wellens (UAE Team Emirates) wins stage 15 of the Tour de France from Muret to Carcassonne (169.3 km).
Today, many riders wanted to break away and the first hours of the race were frenetic with numerous attacks and even a few falls (Lipowitz and Vingegaard, among others, were involved, without consequences).
After the first mountain pass, Wellens, Carlos Rodriguez, Campenaerts, Storer Simmons, Powless, Lutsenko and Mohoric remain in the lead, 40" ahead of a large chasing group of 25 riders and 3' on the yellow jersey.
On the tough climb of Pad du Sant, Storer , Wellens , Simmons and Campenaerts broke away, but there was little agreement between the four and they were subsequently joined by Barguill, Lustenko, Rodriguez and Vlasov.
After rejoining the group, Wellens attacked decisively , quickly opening up a gap and taking off alone. The Belgian champion increased his lead in the following favorable kilometers and triumphed in Carcassonne. Second place went to Campenaerts , with Alaphilippe , who had rejoined at the end, finishing third.
