Easy sprint victory over Vernon and Aular

Jasper Philipsen (Alpecin Deceuninck) wins the first stage of the Vuelta a Espana, from Venaria Reale to Novara.

From km 0, a six-man breakaway formed, with Verre taking the only categorized climb of the stage and the first polka-dot jersey. After La Serra, the attackers recovered and were absorbed by the main group.

In the finale, no one attempted any action, resulting in a predictable sprint with a compact group. Alpecin came into action in the final kilometer after great work by Team Visma to maintain a high pace.

Philipsen clocked the final 200 meters perfectly, quickly edging out Vernon and Aular . Viviani finished 4th. Pedersen was not present, finishing 14th.
