Wout Van Aert crashes and retires; O'Connor drops, but still saves the red jersey
Marc Soler (UAE Team Emirates) wins the sixteenth stage of the Vuelta, starting from Luanco and finishing uphill at Lagos de Covadonga (181.5 km).
The men in the general classification are not interested in the stage victory today either: the breakaway, made up of 17 riders, immediately takes off, almost reaching a maximum advantage of 10 minutes.
With 60 km to go, on the first category climb of Collada Llomena, Movistar sets a strong pace that selects the red jersey group. With 3 km to go, Mas attacks, followed in turn by Landa , but both attempts are cancelled.
On the following descent, Van Aert crashed for the second time today and was forced to retire from the Vuelta.
On the final climb, Zana, Poole and Soler remain in command of the race, while Landa's men work in the group, with the Basque attacking with 8 km to go. In the hardest section, Mas reacts and gets back on Landa with Gaudu, Roglic and Carapaz, while O'Connor drops away.
At 5 km, Soler extends his lead and flies towards his first victory in this Vuelta, after three third places. Behind him, Zana and Poole complete the podium of the day.
Among the best, Roglic, Mas and Carapaz arrive together at the finish line and give O'Connor a 58" lead, saving the red jersey by just 5 seconds.
