Van Aert, Pedersen and Stuyven retired after a bad fall

Matteo Jorgenson wins the Dwars door Vlaanderen 2024. Great action by the Visma Lease a Bike rider who becomes the first American in history to win the appetizer race of the Tour of Flanders.

The race was characterized by a bad fall 67 kilometers from the end which eliminated Wout Van Aert (favourite of the day), Mads Pedersen, Jasper Stuyven and Biniam Girmay.

Van Aert is in tears and in pain, with a large abrasion on his right shoulder, it's difficult to understand how serious the injury is, but it seems difficult to imagine him at the start of the Tour of Flanders next Sunday .

With the fall the group breaks up and the race changes radically.

In the breakaway, there are ten riders, including Casper Pedersen and Mathias Norsgaard, while behind   Benoot, Jorgenson, Kung, Bettiol, Valgren and Tarling briefly resume pace.

With 35 km to go, eleven riders are in the lead: Benoot, Jorgenson, Kung, Casper Pedersen, Bettiol, Valgren, De Bondt, Eenkhoorn, Abrahamsen, Gachignard and De Pooter, with the group chasing 1'35” behind.

On the Nokereberg, 22 km from the end, Bettiol attacks decisively, but is joined by the other counterattackers, primarily Jorgenson and Kung.   The Italian rider, immediately afterwards, had to stop due to a cramp and lost contact with the leading group.

With 7 km to go, Jorgenson breaks away from all his rivals and sets off alone towards the finish line.   Second place for the Uno X rider, Jonas Abrahamsen, ahead of Stefan Kung.
