The Belgian champion remains cautious despite his victory in the World Championships time trial in Rwanda

Despite his impressive victory in the men's time trial, Remco Evenepoel is keeping his feet on the ground ahead of the World Championships road race in Rwanda, where he will be looking for a historic double.

The Belgian rider, who dominated the time trial with a 1:14 lead over Tadej Pogačar, said: "The feeling is good and I'm very motivated, but we can't be too confident after the time trial. Tadej remains the best rider in recent years."

The 268km road race presents several unknowns, with Mount Kigali being the key point. A 5.9km climb with an average gradient of 6.8% could be a deciding factor, especially considering the heat and altitude.

Evenepoel is particularly attentive to Pogačar's long attacks: "Last year, we didn't discuss the long attack scenario, and we were surprised. This year, we'll definitely talk about it, because Mount Kigali is at that distance. We have to stay alert."

Besides Pogačar, the Belgian points to other potential outsiders: "Pidcock, Vine, and Del Toro will be dangerous. But they can't win here with ten men. I expect less from Carapaz and Bernal, who aren't as explosive."

The Belgian champion will be able to count on a strong team with Van Wilder, Campenaerts, and other valuable players. "They're incredibly important to me. Everyone will have their role," concluded Evenepoel, who is aiming for the double rainbow but remains cautious: "Anything can happen, but I expect a race of attrition and elimination."
