Let's start with the analysis of the big names of the classics
There's one month to go, here we are, the hot phase of summer 2020 has begun and we are not talking about the usual nicknames of Greek mythology associated with heat waves, here there is only one thing mythological: Fantacycling .
So, ready to compose the formation and play, everything is very simple as you will have already seen; with the list of runners, profiles and caricatures attached you have everything you need to create a top team.
But what are we here for if we don't also give you some advice to (not) follow to best complete your teams, as well as giving you the possibility of having unlimited changes on the market until July 25th ?
So, with app in hand, let's start analyzing the riders a bit in view of the start of the season or to understand if there are any bargains in the "list" that you may have missed.
Since we will start racing in Italy with Strade Bianche, Sanremo and Lombardia, let's take stock of the big names in the classics, taking into consideration only those who have the SUPERSTAR badge:
The first name is Julian Alaphilippe , obvious of course, he is the rider that we have quoted the most at the moment (55 fantamillions in the list for championship and league at the quote), but he is also the one that on paper can score points everywhere: from the Strade bianche to Sanremo, passing through the Ardennes triptych, the Tour and for the first time also the Tour of Flanders. The Frenchman has tested the route and it seems that he is banking on it a lot. He might not repeat the exploits of last season, in any case he represents a guarantee.
Just like Peter Sagan (quoted at 50 fantamillions), who this year will do the Giro d'Italia for the first time, in addition to the Tour, giving up the northern classics (at the same time as the pink race). Hiring him might be less convenient than in the past, but we are convinced that the Slovakian champion is not coming to the Giro just to make an appearance.
We scroll down our list and find Mathieu Van der Poel . The Dutchman is a thoroughbred, he has already shown it in 2019 and in this close season he could surprise even more. His supercar engine and the habit of racing in a close way (which he does in cyclocross) could represent an advantage in this anomalous season. In addition, he will not only race the northern classics; RCS has invited the Alpecin Fenix as a wild card to all the Italian races (except the Giro d'Italia). He costs 37 fantamillions and if you want to enjoy the simple fact of having him on your team, don't let him slip away.
Let's not forget Jakob Fuglsang , the winner of the last Liège-Bastogne-Liège. He costs 45 million, you would save a few million compared to buying Alaphilippe, but you could have a rider capable of placing often and finding the winning spark sometimes. In addition, he could have a chance of classification at the Giro, given that many big names will throw themselves into the Tour de France. Thinking about him is never wrong.
Then there is the eternal couple: “Don” Alejandro Valverde and Greg Van Avermaet . The first, who has reached 40 years of age, does not want to stop adding trophies to his cabinet. He has an initial cost of 42 fantamillions and at first glance it may seem too much; perhaps it is so, but also in the last season the Murcian has raked in points both in one-day races and in stage races (in the Vuelta he often has to pull the chestnuts out of the fire for Movistar). The Belgian does not win often, but he places everywhere, if you fear that the 43 million spent on him are excessive, then count the points at the end of the season and you will most likely thank him.
Leaving aside the fast wheels, good for the Sanremo, and universal riders like Vincendo Nibali, who we will analyse in the next focuses, let's try to build our team by choosing only two of the superstars of the classics.
The Alaphilippe-Sagan pairing is the most immediate, but you would already be spending 105 million, a fifth of the total budget. It can be done, in fact it is not wrong, but pairing the Frenchman or the Slovakian with a rider like Fuglsang or Van der Poel would allow you not to lower the quality while saving a few million.
The same can be true for Valverde and Van Avermaet, but in this case your points could be less.
Strategy games that will make you enter more and more into the atmosphere of FantaCycling, reminding you that you could dare a little more at the beginning, to then use the changes well in view of the big tours. (You can spend 200 fantamillions for 4 big names of the classics and then change them in view of the Tour or the Giro). It's up to you, there's still a month to go, but we are already ready to play.
