Gianni Moscon suspended in Burgos

Gianni Moscon (Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe) has been expelled from the Vuelta a Burgos for "inappropriate conduct between riders or directed towards a rider," an incident that adds to his long list of disciplinary records.

The specific details of the incident that led to the Italian's exclusion after stage three remain unclear, but the rule cited in the UCI yellow card index is XII 2.12.007 8.2.1: "Aggression, intimidation, insults, threats, misconduct (including pulling another rider's jersey or saddle, hitting with the helmet, knee, elbow, shoulder, foot or hand, etc.), or indecent or endangering behavior - Between riders or directed at a rider."

Contacted by Cyclingnews , Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe declined further comment on the matter, referring to sports director Sven Vanthourenhout: "We respect the jury's decision and will not comment further," the team said in a statement. "Our attention remains focused on the final stages of the race."

Moscon had finished the stage 13 minutes behind the day's winner, Felix Gall, but then disappeared from the standings. His disqualification was later confirmed, along with a fine and the loss of 50 UCI points—a significant blow, even in terms of fantasy cycling, considering how important these points are for rider rankings.

Interestingly, Bahrain Victorious's Mathijs Paasschens also received a yellow card for the same infraction after the third stage, but neither the race statement nor the information provided by the teams linked the two incidents. Despite the penalty, the Dutch rider was not expelled from the race.

While Moscon, 32, had managed to stay away from controversy in recent years, the second half of the 2010s saw him involved in several controversial episodes, with a veritable "criminal record" well known to fans.

Team Sky suspended the Italian for six weeks in 2017 after he racially abused French rider Kevin Reza at the Tour de Romandie, an incident that also resulted in him being required to take a diversity course.

The following year, he was expelled from the Tour de France for attempting to punch Élie Gesbert during the 15th stage, after just 800 meters of racing. This act earned him a five-week suspension from the UCI.

In 2020 he was also disqualified from the Kuurne-Brussel-Kuurne after falling, picking up a bicycle that wasn't his and violently throwing it into the ditch, hitting Jens Debusschere.

Moscon has been riding for Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe since switching from Soudal-QuickStep in 2025. His contract expires at the end of this season, and no new team has been announced for the future.
