The opinion of the 2011 winner of the Sienese classic
The mileage of the Strade Bianche 2024 has been increased by 31 km compared to the previous edition: in fact, it goes from 184 to 215 km in total, with a final circuit to be repeated twice within which there will be the dirt roads of Colle Pinzolo and Tolfe.
These days many are wondering about the possibility that, in the coming years, the Tuscan race could become the sixth monument . The big limit, for now, is precisely linked to the reduced mileage, as the five monument races well exceed 230 km (in 2023 we will go from 238 km in Lombardy to 294 in Sanremo), while the Strade Bianche has always been under 200 km , until today.
Philippe Gilbert , Belgian rider born in 1982, who won this race in 2011 ahead of Ballan and Cunego, opposes the possibility that the Strade Bianche could become a Monument , for various reasons: the first concerns the reduced mileage, the second reason is relating to the lack of historicity of the Tuscan race (in fact only created in 2007) compared to other races such as Amstel or San Sebastian and finally it is also contrary to the possibility that there are three Monuments out of six in Italy.
