Xandro Meurisse experienced a very scary moment at the end of the 16th stage of the 2026 Tour de France , the 26.1km individual time trial. The 34-year-old Belgian rider from Pinarello-Q36.5 was hit from behind by a spectator's car as he was leaving the finish area in Thonon-les-Bains . The impact knocked him to the ground, causing cuts, bruises, and several grazes.

According to a team source who told Cyclingnews , Meurisse's bike was completely destroyed in the accident, and part of his racing clothing was also torn to pieces. Images of the damage were later posted by the rider's fan club on social media, documenting the severity of the impact.

Law enforcement officers were called to the scene, although they were not directly called by the rider or the team. The driver of the car was asked to provide documentation. Despite the unpleasant experience, initial indications are encouraging: Meurisse should be able to start the 17th stage without any problems, although definitive confirmation of his condition will be needed.
