Stage number 16 inaugurates the third week of the Vuelta: 120.1 km starting from Liencres Playa and finishing on the Bejes climb (4.9 km at 8.5%).

Halfway through the race, a breakaway of six riders manages to break away, made up of: Cattaneo , Groves , J.Van den Berg , Nicolau , Poole and Prodhomme . However, the attackers are reached by the red jersey group even before the start of the final climb.

The Jumbo immediately sets a strong pace to try to put its opponents in difficulty; the first to start is Vingegaard, who sprints 4 km from the finish line. Fisher-Black tries to chase him, but is unable to catch up with the Dane, who goes undisturbed until the finish line and takes his second victory of his Vuelta.

In the last kilometer Roglic also starts and puts the red jersey Kuss in difficulty. Fisher-Black maintains second position, while Poels takes third.

The Roglic-Ayuso-Mas-Vlasov group reaches 1'01", while Kuss reaches 1'05".

The American retains the red jersey, but with only 29" on Vingegaard and 1'33" on Roglic .
