Australia will field a 28-man team in Kigali, aiming for an aggressive strategy in the road races
AusCycling has announced the 28 riders who will represent Australia at the upcoming UCI Road World Championships in Kigali, in the Elite, Under-23, and Junior categories. Neve Bradbury of Canyon-SRAM and Jai Hindley of Bora-Hansgrohe will lead the Elite road races.
Notable absences include Sarah Gigante (AG Insurance-Soudal), who recently suffered a fractured femur in training, and Ben O'Connor of Team Jayco-AlUla, currently competing in the Vuelta a España.
The course at the World Championships in Kigali promises to be one of the toughest ever, with 5,475 meters of elevation gain for the men's event and 3,350 meters for the women's. In the absence of a clear favorite, technical director Conor Taylor has stated that the Australians will adopt an aggressive strategy.
Led by 23-year-old Bradbury, supported by the experience of Amanda Spratt (Lidl-Trek), together with Brodie Chapman, Lauretta Hanson, Alex Manly and Ruby Roseman-Gannon.
Hindley will lead a strong group that includes Michael Storer, Chris Hamilton, Callum Scotson, Jay Vine, Chris Harper, Michael Matthews and Luke Plapp.
Australia will also defend its mixed relay title, which it won in Zurich in 2024, becoming the first non-European nation to win gold in this event. The team for this event will include Chapman, Hanson, Spratt, Matthews, Vine, and Plapp over the 42.1km course.
Unlike other nations such as Denmark, the Netherlands and Ireland, who withdrew their youth teams for logistical and budgetary reasons, Australia will field a full squad in the Under-23 and Junior categories as well.
