Politt pulls off a solo success at the Tour of Britain

The 2026 Tour of Britain Men's season concludes with a perfect double for UAE Team Emirates-XRG, who secured a stage win and overall victory. On Sunday, in the Scottish Lammermuir Hills, the Emirati team dominated, taking Tim Wellens to the top step of the podium, while Nils Politt stole the show with a textbook solo attack.

The stage heated up on the windswept moors of the Scottish border, where three classified climbs packed into just 20 kilometers served as a detonator. First, Netcompany Ineos, then UAE itself, pushed the peloton into single file along the narrow, windy roads, resulting in a brutal selection process that reduced the leading group to just eight riders.

With five riders in the decisive breakaway, UAE Team Emirates-XRG was able to control the race with the confidence of those with numbers on their side. After sealing their lead in the final two laps around the start and finish town of Earlston, the team began to play its tactical cards on the final circuit, waiting for the right moment to strike.

With eight kilometers to go, Politt broke away with a decisive attack, symbolically leaving the competition chasing a ghost. Not even a series of desperate counterattacks could close the gap created by the German, who thus crossed the finish line triumphantly, securing a prestigious victory on British soil.

Behind him, completing a UAE-backed one-two, Florian Vermeersch took second place, just six seconds behind his teammate. Filippo Ganna, representing Netcompany-Ineos, rounded out the day's podium, edging out the chasing pack for third place.

On the general classification front, Tim Wellens handled the situation with the clarity of a great champion: an eighth-place finish on the stage, but above all a reassuring margin over his closest pursuer in the standings, were enough to mathematically secure the overall victory of the Tour of Britain Men.
