Sustainability and savings on two wheels; cycle tourism boom

The average use of bicycles has been steadily increasing for about ten years now, even in Italy, a nation that, in terms of road culture, is certainly not yet up to speed with some European countries that are much more virtuous in this regard.

The latest data shows a 26% increase in bicycle travel and a very slight decrease in car use: this translates into lower economic expenditure (consider that in 2024 Italians spent 105 billion euros on car maintenance) and, obviously, lower air pollution.

It's not just urban travel, often for work, but also cycling tourism, which is increasingly popular in Italy, with destinations increasingly specializing in promoting this type of fully sustainable tourism. In 2024, 89 million visitors were recorded (+54% compared to 2023), with an estimated economic impact of nearly €9.8 billion; official data for the last year is not yet available, but initial estimates point to a further increase.
